What are the Five Pillars of Islam?

Five Pillars of Islam:                The Five Pillars of Islam are the core beliefs of the Islamic faith. The Five Pillars are believed to be first in importance in the way one lives one's life. They hold the same type of sacred qualities that the Ten Commandments hold to Jews and Christians. One main difference is that the Five Pillars don’t merely describe what to avoid, but what one must do in order to be faithful and true in one’s practice of Islam. The Five Pillars are prioritized, and the first is Testimony of Faith or Shahadah . Each Muslim must believe and say that there is no God but Allah. This emphasizes the monotheistic nature of Islamic belief, which differed from some of the polytheistic practices one could find in the 7th century CE. Though both Jews and Christians could certainly be found in the area where Muhammad rose to power, many worshipped numerous Gods. Thus, emphasis on the one tru...

What Is Iftar?

Iftar        "A day of Sawm begins with Suhur"              Iftar is the meal which is eaten after sunset during Sawm, the fasting which occurs during the month of Ramadan in Muslim tradition. Since people have not eaten at all during the day, they are often quite hungry by the time Iftar comes around, and most people hasten to end the fast as quickly as possible after sunset. In communities with a large Muslim population, a cannon may be fired or other signal given to indicate the end of the day's fast, and the information may be broadcast over the media as well. By tradition, all able-bodied Muslims who are not traveling participate in Sawm, although children who have not yet experienced puberty are not required to fast. In addition to abstaining from food, devout Muslims refrain from a number of activities, most notably sexual relations. The Sawm fast during Ramadam is intended to teach s...

What is Eid-ul-Adha?

Eid UL Adha :: Id ul-Zuha                     The Eid ul-Adha is one of two Islamic feasts celebrated each year. The word Eid translates to "feast." The Eid ul-Adha actually celebrates several religious themes and traditionally lasts for four days. Dates for celebrating the Eid ul-Adha vary since the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle. It can thus fall in either December or January. However, the Arabic calendar always marks the month of Dhul Hijja, or the tenth month of the year, as the month for this celebration. One important aspect of the Eid ul-Adha is that it commemorates Abraham’s (Ibrahim) readiness to obey Allah and sacrifice his son. To some Islamic people, this son is always Ishmael. That comes as a surprise to Christians and Jews who traditionally think God asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. In other Islamic sects, it is not specified which son Abraham was asked to ...
