Solution:
Q1: Define ‘Pronoun Reference’ and explain it with reference to the following. (5)
· number
· gender
Answer:
A pronoun is typically a word that stands in place of a noun phrase. It refers to a person, place, thing, feeling, or quality. A pronoun usually refers to something earlier in the text. It is called antecedent. A pronoun's antecedent may be either a noun or another pronoun. Pronouns such as him, her, it, they, you and etc clearly refer to specific nouns. The antecedent shows the agreement between noun and pronoun. There are different agreements in English language which indicate the pronoun reference. Agreement with Number:
Number refers to the distinction between singular nouns and pronouns and plural nouns and pronouns. Errors in number occur when the noun or pronoun that is the subject of the sentence is referred to with an incorrect pronoun in number.A pronoun agrees in number in a construction. A pronoun may be singular or plural. I, me, he, him, she, her, it, anyone, this that, are all singular. The pronoun will be singular if the antecedent is the singular. The pronoun will be the plural if the antecedent is the plural. We, us, they, them, all, these, those, are all plural pronouns.
Agreement with Gender:
A pronoun shows the gender of the reflected noun in a construction. It may be masculine, feminine, common, or neuter. The traditional pronoun for the masculine third person singular, he, his, him. For feminine the pronouns are she, her. The common gender of the noun is described through the help of pronoun they them and theirs. And neuter gender of the noun is reflected through the pronouns it, it’s.
